Why Manipulatives Work

A manipulative is a physical or digital object a student can move, stack, split, and rearrange. When a student drags a fraction piece into a whole circle, they are not memorizing a rule—they are seeing why the rule is true. That is the difference between a student who can perform a procedure and a student who understands the concept underneath it.

Manipulatives are especially useful for neurodivergent students, students with executive function differences, and any student who learns better through touch and movement than through listening. They reduce the working memory load of holding an abstract idea in your head while also trying to calculate. The object holds the idea for you.
